Charities
Charities and not-for-profit organisations operate in a dynamic and highly regulated environment, with recent developments such as the Charities Act 2006 and SORP 2005 bringing a new focus on issues like public benefit and transparent financial reporting. Our priority is always to provide our clients with the necessary technical support they require to meet their financial and administrative challenges, and provide a professional and friendly service that is driven by the needs of the organisation and the charity's Trustees.
We act for a number of significant charities and independent schools in the region, and have an excellent knowledge and experience of the not-for-profit sector amongst our professional staff. Our charity clients range from large independent schools and publicly funded service providers to smaller local clubs and voluntary organisations. The services we provide include audit / independent examination, assistance with the preparation of SORP compliant financial statements, bookkeeping and management reporting, and advice on financial controls and reserves policy.
Our strong technical awareness, and access to the wider resources of the UHY Hacker Young Group, also allows us to give our clients clear and practical advice on the complex financial and tax issues faced by the sector, such as Gift Aid, the use of trading subsidiaries and VAT compliance and planning.
We have:
- Registered the service company of a charity for VAT resulting in savings of around £2,000 a year. Its client could recover the VAT charged
- Advised on the structure of developments at another of our clients to maximise VAT recovery. This involves partial exemption VAT in both the charity and its trading subsidiary
If you feel that we can be of assistance, please contact Nevil Pearce, Hayden Priest, Linda Sargeant or Gareth Burrow.
